Myth #1: Don’t use white - it shows dirt
Pure white slipcovers, towels, curtains or rugs can be the most practical accessories to decorate with, as long as they are bleachable and washable. Just keep in mind your environment if planning on decorating a room in all white, such as living in a snowy or rainy climate, having children under 5 or a shedding pet.
Myth #2: It all has to match
A mix of styles, colors and patterns can be visually exciting. Try to have a common element such as a color or design to tie everything together. Mismatching is a currently a trend.
Myth #3: You need a sofa, chair and coffee table
Instead of thinking of what you are “supposed” to have, think of what you “need” in a particular room to make it functional. Think of how the room is used and if seating is more important than you may opt for a couple ottomans in place of a coffee table.
Myth #4: The sofa goes against a wall
Not always! Get creative and set pieces at an angle or or in small conversational groups away from the walls. Place your sofa in front of the fireplace to draw your family and close friends together in a warm, cozy and welcoming conversation area.
Myth #5: Paint small rooms pale colors to make them look bigger
It’s not a bad thing to paint your tiny study a dark brown or red. Dark paint in a smaller room can emphasize its coziness and make for an interesting environment. Think of the statement you want to make, not what the rules say.
